Cal-Sag Trail
June 19, 2021
9 AM

This Saturday's club ride will be the Cal-Sag Trail, which travels alongside the Cal-Sag Canal, starting in Lemont and riding to Alsip and back (26 miles). The Cal Sag Canal (aka Calumet-Saganashkee) connects the DesPlaines River with Lake Michigan.

We will meet at 8:45, to begin riding at 9:00. The trail is new, well-paved, and mostly flat. There are sections of open prairie; other sections along the canal have lots of tree-cover. This is an out-and-back trail, so if you want fewer miles, it is very easy to turn around at any point and head back.

We will stop for a couple of breaks, one of which will be Lake Katherine Nature Center, after 10 miles of riding--a good spot for an extended break with whatever snacks you want to bring. Some riders may want to turn around here, making for a 20 mile ride. Others may want to continue for another 3 miles to Alsip. (This last 3 miles is not especially scenic.)

There is a port-a-potty at the beginning of the ride. After about 7-8 miles, there is the option of stopping at a CVS to use their restrooms. (On past rides on this trail, we used restrooms at Lake Katherine; these are still closed due to the coronavirus.)

Casual ride. No one left behind.

Reminders: Helmets are expected safety gear. Bike must be in reasonable condition. Guests are welcome to join us for one ride but are expected to join the club for additional rides (insurance requirements). Bring a mask to use restrooms. We'll practice appropriate social distancing when not riding. Fountains will probably be disabled so bring enough water.

Starting Location:
Sag Quarries Forest Preserve, Lemont (Alternate: Across the road from Meno Stone, 10800 IL-83, Lemont)

Distance: 26 miles
Average Speed: 10-12 mph
Leader: Peg (oherronpeg@gmail.com)
