Join me for a ride on the Long Prairie Trail and the Stone Bridge Trail from Capron to Roscoe, IL this Saturday. The ride is 18 miles one-way on a mostly limestone trail. (approximately 36 miles round trip.) There is a mixture of sun and shade. It is a relatively flat rail trail passing through a couple small towns. I plan to stop for lunch in Roscoe before returning. You are welcome to return sooner as time and energy permit, since this is a simple out and back ride. We'll cross a stone railroad bridge dating from the 1880's. We pass a park commemorating a farmstead dating to the 1850's.
We haven't done this ride as a club for some years. Part of the trail is often included in "Roun Da Manure" from Sharon, WI. The section from Capron to Poplar Grove was asphalt in pretty bad condition. The bridges were pretty rough. (The bounce on one bridge launched one of Karen's water bottles into the creek below last time I rode this trail.) Last year as a result of some generous donations the bad asphalt was removed and replaced with limestone, and the bridges were replaced as well. The trail was rededicated last fall after the reconstruction was completed. Karen and I eyeballed the trail yesterday on the way home from the ride in Rockford, and it looks good. We'll ride the new part of the trail this week to make sure it is suitable. (If not, I'll post an alternate ride by Thursday evening.)
